Advocates help families navigate the complex systems that they enter when a child makes an outcry of abuse.
Each family is assigned a family advocate, who guides them through their visit to the McHenry County Children’s Advocacy Center, and explains the investigation and legal process. The family advocate listens to their concerns, and informs them about the dynamics of sexual abuse and the effects of trauma.
As each case goes through the investigation, prosecution and healing process, our advocates are there to help families understand the process, learn about their rights and ensure that children and families get the culturally-sensitive support, education and resources they need to help them overcome the trauma of abuse.
Family advocates play a critical role in connecting clients with community resources to address needs including domestic violence, housing, clothing, food, financial assistance, legal assistance, mental health and medical needs.
Family advocates maintain long-term contact with families to continue to empower them to obtain the resources and services they need to lead healthy lives.
